Hong Kong Security Law: What is it and why is it so controversial?
China has passed a controversial national security law that gives Beijing sweeping new powers over the semi-autonomous city of Hong Kong.
The Chinese government says the law is needed to curb unrest and uphold mainland sovereignty while critics and those behind Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement say it marks the end of the city’s civil and political freedoms.
The new law prohibits what China describes broadly as secession, subversion, terrorism and collusion with foreign countries, with up to life in prison for offenders.
The security law on Hong Kong has spurred a wave of criticism and international outcry, including from leaders of the European Union, Taiwan, Canada and the United States who say the law could lead to Chinese government interference and infringements on freedoms.

Hong Kong three years after the "National Security Law" came into force | DW News
Hong Kong used to be a liberal, permissive haven within Chinese territory. It was a place where people could demonstrate against the government. And where culture and art was relatively free. But since the 2020 National Security Laws were introduced, this freedom has been sharply reduced. And although public protests have dwindled in recent years, attention has turned to publications. Schools and libraries are being forced by authorities to remove books and films that feature political themes. Many people have fled – to among other places to the UK. Our correspondent Winnie Sung met Hong Kongers there who are safeguarding culture that’s banned at home.

“One country, two systems” was the catch-phrase coined by China’s president Deng Xiaoping in the 1980s, when China and Britain held negotiations on the future of Hong Kong. The two countries signed the Joint Declaration in 1984, setting out China’s basic policies towards Hong Kong upon resuming sovereignty in 1997.Under the principle of “one country, two systems”, the socialist system would not be practiced in Hong Kong and the previously existing capitalist economy and Western-style legal system and rights would remain unchanged for 50 years. These policies were incorporated into the Basic Law, the prime source of Hong Kong’s legal doctrine since 1997.

Hong Kong begins work on its own National Security Law
Hong Kong began a public consultation on a local National Security Law on Tuesday, more than three years after Beijing imposed a similar law that has all but wiped out dissent in the semi-autonomous city. Hong Kong’s mini-constitution, the Basic Law, calls for the city to enact a national security law, but it’s been delayed for decades because of widespread public opposition. The city’s crackdown on political opposition has likely cleared the way for the new bill to pass easily. City leader John Lee said a local version is still necessary to keep Hong Kong safe against “potential sabotage,” but critics fear it will further erode civil liberties. #hongkong #nationalsecuritylaw

Hundreds arrested on first day of Hong Kong national security law
At least 300 people were arrested July 1, with nine arrests of five men and four women on suspicion of violating the national security law, according to police. Hundreds turned out to protest China's central government decision to impose a sweeping national security law that critics say has stripped the city of its autonomy and precious civil and social freedoms, and cements Beijing's authoritarian rule over the territory.

But what do those crimes really entail and what can the law actually do? Emanuela Campanella explains.
